Residence permit on opening a sole proprietorship
This method of legalization is suitable for those who are willing to wait. Case review period is 1.5-2 years from the date of submission.
Basic Requirements:
- To open a self-employment “Atividade”
- Availability of a Portuguese bank account
- Recibo Verde statement with several receipts on the account from 760 €
Benefits:
- Residence permit for 2 years for the applicant
- Family members receive a residence permit for 2 years upon reunification
- During the period of waiting for residence permit it is possible and necessary to conduct business and show regular profits
- After 5 years of legal residence Permanent Residence or Portuguese citizenship
To obtain this residence permit, you can come to Portugal on any Schengen visa and start the legalization process inside the country.
StartUp Visa
A program for those who want to start their project from scratch.
Basic Requirements:
- An innovative idea or start-up business with job creation potential.
- Availability of higher education;
- 6,000€ in a bank account for each applicant
Benefits:
- Residence permit for 2 years for the applicant
- Family members receive a residence permit for 2 years upon reunification
- After 5 years of residence permit, you can obtain a permanent residence permit or request Portuguese citizenship
- Opportunity to work, open your own business
The application for the program is completely online. You can apply from any country, and after the project is approved, you can come to Portugal on a Schengen visa to obtain a residence permit.
For the school student and his/her parents
If a child is studying in Portugal in a public/private school, he/she and his/her parents can obtain a residence permit on this basis
Basic Requirements:
- The age of the child is 12-18 years old
- Enroll your child in school and get Matricula
- Availability of livelihood 9.120 €
Benefits:
- The child receives a residence permit for 1 year, after which the parents can reunite with him/her and receive a residence permit for 2 years
- Parents’ residence permit gives the right to work, open a business in Portugal
- After 5 years of residence permit, you can obtain a permanent residence permit or request Portuguese citizenship
To apply for this type of residence permit, you must come to Portugal on a Schengen visa and submit the documents within the country.
Student residence permit
There are three ways in which you can get a resident card:
Language courses
Cost from 1.000€ – 2.500€ per year. Attendance of at least 75% of classes is mandatory
Professional courses / Retraining
Cost from 2.200€ – 3.500€ per year
University programs (bachelor’s, master’s, retraining)
Cost from 3.000€ – 5.000€ per year. Attendance and knowledge of English/Portuguese is mandatory
Basic Requirements:
- Document of enrollment and course fee payment
- Portuguese bank statement with an account balance of 9.800€
Benefits:
- No age restrictions
- Residence permit for 1-2 years with the possibility to extend, work and open a business in Portugal
- Family members receive residence permit on reunification

Digital Nomad Visa
Basic Requirements:
- Monthly income from remote work 3.100€
- Savings from 9.120€ for the main applicant, 4.560€ for a second adult and 2.736€ for a child.
- Confirm that your employer is outside Portugal (employment contract or other contract)
Benefits:
- Residence permit for 2 years for the applicant and the whole family
- Family members can be included in the application at once
- After 5 years of residence permit, you can obtain a permanent residence permit or request Portuguese citizenship
You must apply for a visa at the Portuguese Consulate in the country where you have citizenship/residency. That said, there are two types of visas:
– Short-term – issued for up to 1 year, it cannot be extended and cannot be used to obtain a residence permit.
– Long-term – issued for a period of more than 1 year and is the basis for obtaining a residence permit for 2 years with the possibility of extension for 3 years.
